The Museum of Forest Experimentation at Mariabrunn
|
A revolution flag of the year 1848, a "tree-lift" or a soil injector for pest control are quaint exhibits of the Museum of Forest Experimentation which is hosted at the building of the Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW) at Mariabrunn, in the outskirts of Vienna.
History of Forest Research
The Museum concentrates especially on forestry and forest research. It hosts more than 800 exhibits among which treasures such as original documents by Josef Ressel, the inventor of the ship's propeller including his time as a student.
The archives comprise many original publications dating back to the beginnings of forest research.
One of them is the pioneering study by Adolf Cieslar on the importance of the provenance of seed material for the improvement of spruce and larch.

|
Cieslar (1984 to 1905 at BFW) was the first to recognize the importance of provenance research.

A large collection of more than 1500 wood species and an interesting "xylotheque" comprising the most important native tree species of Austria complete the Museum. In addition, original pieces for the works of Gabriel Janka on the "durability of wood" are exhibited.
